A Living Fence

By incorporating native grasses that sway in the wind and aromatic, wispy plants like lavender, this kitchen garden features a living fence that naturally deters deer and rabbits. The slightly terraced kitchen garden is flanked on its western edge by a vibrant Monarch Waystation, filled with milkweed and nectar-rich plants beloved by bees, butterflies, and other beneficial insects who diligently safeguard the edible garden.

To maximize growing space, melons and squash cascade over the edges of raised beds, while tomatoes grow up and over an arch trellis. This garden proves that small space vegetable gardening can be as beautiful as it is bountiful.

Note: these photos were taken in the first year; while we wait for the grasses to fill in, we rely on temporary fencing for critter protection.
